Your choice of route dictates how much of the 21-hectare complex you will see. The full Historical Route requires more walking and time. The Castle Grounds Route is a faster option that focuses entirely on the exterior fortifications.

What does the Historical Route include?

This ticket provides full access to the castle interiors, museum exhibits, and courtyards.

You will explore the High, Middle, and Lower Castle sections. This includes the Grand Masters' Palace, the Chapter House, and the Amber Collection. An adult ticket for this full route costs 80 PLN as of 2026. A reduced ticket costs 60 PLN.

What is the Green Route at Malbork Castle?

The Green Route, or Castle Grounds Route, only grants access to the exterior spaces.

You can walk through the dry moats, outer baileys, and the main courtyards. You cannot enter the palace interiors, chapels, or museum exhibitions on this path. This option is cheaper than the Historical Route. On Mondays, this outdoor route is completely free, though you still need a ticket from the office.

Malbork Historical vs Green route differences

The main differences are price, time required, and interior access.

Review the breakdown below to decide which ticket fits your schedule.

How much time do you need for each route?

The full Historical Route takes 3.5 to 4 hours to complete.

The grounds-only path takes significantly less time because you skip the dense museum exhibits and interior rooms. Bring a refillable water bottle and wear flat walking shoes for either choice. You will walk across uneven cobbled courtyards.

Should I book the Historical Route?

Yes, if you want to see how the Teutonic Knights lived and governed.

The interiors hold the most detailed architectural elements of the fortress. You will see the palm vaults in the Grand Refectory and the medieval warm-air heating system under the floors. If you skip the interiors, you miss these structural details and the historical artifacts.

How do tickets work for these routes?

Tickets are timed-entry and must be pre-purchased or collected before you enter.

Ensure your phone or printed ticket clearly states which route you booked. Read our Ticket Prices & Rules guide to understand how to prepare your entry pass and valid ID for reduced tickets.
